How we teach:

Targets, Targets, Targets
Every student is different, some have great abilities in being able to learn languages some spend years struggling through elementary levels. It’s a fact, but many people believe that some people have a special “gift” for learning languages and others don’t but SLC doesn’t believe this.

Students’ abilities to learn are based on 2 facts:
1) Firstly the student must be motivated to study. A student who expects that 1 or 2 lessons a month will increase their abilities effectively is sadly mistaken.

A student’s lesson is designed to supply a concentration of new vocabulary, speaking, listening and grammatical references. The student should then understand that for every lesson spent in the classroom an additional lesson should be allocated by themselves for self study.

2) Secondly, the abilities of the teacher are a direct representation of the student’s success. Teachers are normal people too, and like any normal person they have their strengths and weaknesses. What makes the teacher special is their ability to recognize the weaknesses in their student and understand the students goals for their study and then design lessons that are “tailor made” for each student.

SLC tries to test all new students individually before the commencement of their lessons to evaluate the student’s abilities not just grammatically but based on the 4 key areas of language, speaking, reading, listening and writing. This helps us to find the most suitable teacher and lesson plan for each individual student.

So in summary, the 2 prerequisites for being able to learn languages are 1) your motivation and 2) the abilities of your teacher. Simply put, half of your job is already done when you join with SLC.

SLC promotes lesson structures based on achievable and recognizable certificates, depending on the student’s level. Lessons are structured around the use of educational books which concentrate on raising the student’s abilities to a level where they can sit an officially recognized certificate in either, PET, KET, FCE, CAE, CPE or BEC of all levels.

SLC supports materials used by most leading publishers. New books are being published almost every year from most leading publishers and sometimes it’s hard for students to know which they should study from. Some books are good and others are just horrible to work with so our teachers will offer you a range of materials suitable to your level and learning goals.

The reason why we suggest the study from educational books is not just because of the opportunity to pass an official certificate in English but also simply because we understand that when a student can keep all their learning in one place (like a book), it reduces the chance of things getting lost in their desk at work or from sliding behind the couch at home. Also the book will hopefully always be there when you need it. Even 5 years in the future you may pull it out of storage to check through something you’ve forgotten or maybe to pass it on to your kids when they start to study.

If passing an officially recognized certificate is not part of your learning goals (as is the case with many businesses) then yearly testing based on simplified versions of the above tests or The Common European Framework are available to give you a factual record of you or your employees progress, and so allow your business to see how effective the studies of each individual student are.

SLC also recommends restrictions on the amount of students in one class at any given time. Many of our students remember their days at grammar school or university sitting in a classroom with 20-30 other students going through entire lessons of English without speaking a single word. What an absolute waste of time! The best results for companies and the general public are from individual or group lessons of 4 or less students. Each student is then able to receive as much attention from the teacher as they require and has the opportunity to “speak, speak, speak”, which is something many students don’t get a chance to do outside of the classroom.
